Seems mom was concerned whether B. was comprehending what he was reading. In that light, today I pulled out an END-OF-YEAR testing booklet for SECOND grade. The results are just as I expected. B. passed the comprehension test.
When B. is reading and makes miscues (errors), he is going back to self-monitor using the 3 cueing systems after much guided reading practice with me.
He is making corrections when the words he reads don't "look" right. The word was cousins and he read cousin, saw the "s" and went back to self-correct. Now it looks right.
He is making corrections when the words he reads don't "sound" right. They took her to live in a please was corrected to... They took her to live in a place called Marineland. Now it sounds right. It didn't sound right to live in a please.
And most importantly, he is making corrections when the words don't make sense. At last the men bought a big, big crane was corrected to At last the men brought a big, big crane. Now it makes sense. Again, Then Mabel was lifted from feet... corrected to Then Mabel was lifted fifty feet. Now it makes sense!
Self-monitoring is the way Aunt P. checked for comprehension as B. was reading. But the test confirms the oral reading miscue analysis... B. truly is comprehending what he is reading.
When B. first started summer quest, he wasn't attending to most of what he read. He used only one cueing system, not the most important one either, and he seldom self-corrected. It didn't bother him at all to read... "The bot will not go" when those were the only words on the page having a huge picture of 3 men in a boat surrounded by water. That was on the first day. Also on the first day, he read "Look a the plane." for "Look at the airplane." He has come a long way by experiencing new text readings, building up his confidence, and having lots of guided practice with using the 3 cueing systems.
Our next step is to build his sight word recognition and to have lots of practice with opportunities of self-monitoring skills, vocabulary development, and fluency growth. And B. is totally up for the challenge!
Good job on your comprehension test B. Keep up the enthusiasm!
Signed, Aunt P.
Sounds to me that B. has made great progress with his reading skills this summer. I am glad to know that he is reading and understanding what he reads. Keep up the good work B. I have a list of sight words that were sent home at the end of the school year last year, I will have to give those to Aunt P. for ya'll to work on since that is the next step.
